The Gateway of Salvation, Part 1

“I closed my eyes, but the whispers didn’t stop—they were coming from inside the darkness.”

The Gateway of Salvation – Part 1

A young woman named Emily had recently moved to Edinburgh to pursue her master’s degree. As part of her transition, she was actively searching for accommodation, but after spending 3–4 days, she couldn’t find a place that fit within her budget. Despite her persistent efforts, nothing seemed to meet her requirements.

Her close friend Sarah, who had been living in the city for a while, wanted to help but faced an obstacle—her current roommate wasn’t comfortable with sharing their space. This left Emily with limited options. However, Sarah didn’t give up; she decided to reach out to her friend Ethan, hoping he could assist in finding suitable accommodation for Emily.

A few days later, Sarah received a call from Ethan. She eagerly asked if he had found a place for Emily. Ethan mentioned that he did find a place, but there was a catch—it was located near a place called “The Gateway of Salvation.” Curious, Sarah asked him what it was. Ethan hesitated and explained that it was a site where funeral rites were performed after someone’s passing.

Later that day, Sarah informed Emily about the available accommodation and its unsettling location.

Emily, surprised, asked, “The Gateway of Salvation? What is that?”

Sarah hesitantly replied, “It’s the place where the last rites are conducted after a person dies.”

Hearing this, Emily exclaimed in a concerned tone, “What kind of place are you suggesting? You know how scared I am of such things!”

Sarah, equally uneasy, admitted, “I understand, Emily. Even I wouldn’t be comfortable with such things, but finding a place within your budget is really tough. Ultimately, it’s your decision. If you feel okay with it, we can proceed.”

After a moment of contemplation, Emily sighed and said, “I don’t have any other choice right now. I can’t stay with you either, and your roommate wouldn’t allow it.”

Left with no alternatives, Emily reluctantly decided to finalize the deal and move into the new accommodation. On the day of shifting, Sarah and Ethan accompanied her, helping her settle into the house with her belongings.

Once inside, Emily turned to Ethan and asked, “Who else will be staying here?”

Ethan replied, “You’ll be the only one staying here.”

Emily, slightly anxious, asked, “What about the lower floor?”

Ethan reassured her, “No one will be living there either. This entire house is yours. No one will disturb you, so you can stay comfortably.”

As Emily looked around the spacious yet eerily silent house, an unsettling thought crossed her mind. She turned to Ethan with a worried expression and exclaimed,

“What! There’s no one here to accompany me? How did I manage to get such a big house at such a low price? I mean, I’m getting an entire two-story house for the price of a single room!”

Ethan sighed, hesitating for a moment before explaining,
“People around here are very superstitious, Emily. Because of the place nearby—’The Gateway of Salvation’—no one is willing to stay here. That’s why the landlord agreed to lower the rent significantly, just to have someone occupy it.”

Hearing this, Emily’s anxiety grew. She glanced toward the dimly lit corridor and felt a shiver run down her spine. Despite the spaciousness, the house felt suffocatingly empty.

Shortly after, Ethan glanced at his phone and said,
“I have some work to do, so I should get going now. Call me if you need anything.”
He gave her an encouraging smile before stepping out and disappearing into the night.

Sarah, who had been helping Emily settle in, finished placing a few of her belongings and checked the time. She sighed and said,
“Alright, Emily, I should leave too.”
