“The Betrayal in Gopipura” – A True Crime Story

Tucked away in the hills of Uttarakhand, about 15 kilometers from the bustling town of Kashipur, lies the quiet village of Gopipura—a place where life moved slowly and people lived simply. Among them was Shivcharan Singh, a retired peon from the Hempur Bus Depot. A man of modest means, he lived peacefully with his family, raising his children with love and discipline.

Shivcharan had three children—a daughter named Bala, and two sons, Budh Singh and Brijmohan Singh. Over the years, he worked hard to build a secure life for them. When the time came, he married off his daughter and even built separate homes for each son. While Budh chose to live separately with his wife, Brijmohan remained with his parents, caring for them and contributing to the household.

On the evening of May 20, 2022, Brijmohan stepped out of the house around 8:00 p.m., carrying empty bottles to fetch water from the village cooler—a task he did every day. No one thought much of it. But as night deepened and he didn’t return, unease began to grow. The family assumed he might’ve stopped for a drink—he occasionally indulged. But as hours passed, and he still didn’t come back, worry turned into panic.

The family, and soon the whole village, began searching for him. Around midnight, someone found him—lying unconscious, drenched in blood, on a deserted plot near the village. The sight was horrifying. He was rushed to the LD Bhatt Government Hospital in Kashipur, but it was too late. Brijmohan had died.

The news sent shockwaves through the village. Who could have done this? Why?

Police from Kashipur, led by Inspector Manoj Ratudi, arrived promptly. Initial inquiries revealed that Brijmohan had no enemies, no recent conflicts, and lived a quiet, hardworking life. But the postmortem report told a darker tale—multiple injuries, particularly a fatal blow to the back of his head.

And yet, the most peculiar thing was that Preeti Kaur, Brijmohan’s wife, showed no signs of grief. She insisted it was a natural death. Her calmness raised red flags.

Crime

As police dug deeper, a buried secret began to surface.

Preeti, originally from Muradnagar in Ghaziabad, had met Brijmohan years ago while staying with her maternal grandparents near Gopipura. Despite coming from different religions, they fell in love and married against her family’s wishes. Preeti even drugged her mother with sleeping pills mixed into lassi to escape and marry Brijmohan. Her mother died shortly after. Still, Preeti never returned home.

For eight years, the couple seemed content. They had a daughter together. But beneath the surface, things were far from perfect.

Police checked Preeti’s phone records and uncovered a disturbing pattern—frequent calls and WhatsApp messages to a young man named Saurabh. Saurabh wasn’t just any acquaintance. He was Brijmohan’s own nephew, his sister’s son. Further investigation revealed the truth—Preeti and Saurabh were having an affair.

Saurabh often visited the house, even when Brijmohan wasn’t around. Their chats were personal, intimate, and sometimes vulgar. It was clear—this wasn’t just a casual fling. It was something far deeper, far more dangerous.

Surveillance footage revealed Saurabh trailing Brijmohan the night of his murder, walking the same path toward the water cooler. That was the final piece of the puzzle. The suspicion became certainty.

A manhunt for Saurabh began. He fled but left behind his phone, which further confirmed the affair. Eventually, police caught him—and under interrogation, he confessed.

The story he told was chilling.

He and Preeti had been involved for months. They both knew Brijmohan stood in the way. So, they decided to remove him. That night, Saurabh followed his uncle and attacked him, delivering fatal blows to the head, and left him to die in the dirt.

Preeti stayed home, pretending to know nothing, hiding behind a mask of indifference.

This was no ordinary crime. It was a slow-burning betrayal. A story of love turned rotten, of trust shattered by lust, and of a family destroyed from within.

In the quiet village of Gopipura, where relationships once meant everything, one woman and one man proved just how dangerous hidden desires can be.
